Coronavirus represents an unprecedented challenge for the UK and those who are affected by the spread, could be pushed into poverty – especially self-employed workers, those on low incomes or in unstable jobs who aren’t eligible for sick pay. In the chancellor’s budget, he announced a number of welcome changes to the benefits system, however, as the outbreak looks likely to push more people onto Universal Credit, more measures are needed to strengthen the safety net for the most vulnerable people.
We join our partners at the The Joseph Rowntree Foundation, The Trussell Trust and Little Village HQ in saying the most effective way to help would be to end the five-week wait for a first Universal Credit payment by giving people grants, rather than loans that have to be paid back later.
As well as stocks of food basics falling, loo roll and baby essentials are becoming difficult to source. We are working on how we can support those in need as the situation develops. In the meantime, we encourage the public to continue supporting us in any way they can.
